World Health Organization

There are over billions of people around the world, that have some sort of health disability. There are millions of adults and many children who have a some kind of difficulty functioning with themselves. Rates show that there are increases in disabilities in aging and severe health conditions. With that being said, people will have less health care and not reach their health care needs due to their disabilities.

The organization International Classification of Functioning, describes disabilities as an understanding for activity limitations and participation restrictions. Disability is a interaction with some type of health condition and personal environmental factors such as depression, negativity, limited social skills or transportation cut off. Billions of people are estimated to end up with some sort of disability in their life time. While some conditions associate with poor health health care, many others don't. However, everyone will still have the same health care plan even with disabilities. It is said that people with disabilities are getting more care than people without disabilities but have greater unmet needs.

Now when it comes to health promotion and prevention, they end up more targeting people with disabilities. People with disabilities are more likely to gain deficiencies in health care services. Depending on the person, he or she with that disability may see greater vulnerability to secondary conditions, co-morbid conditions, or age-related conditions. Secondary conditions happens in addition to the primary one, and both become more predictable and curable and same goes for Co-morbid conditions. The aging process begins earlier than usual and with that, people will start to develop premature aging.

Now when it comes to affordability and finances, affordability is a main reason why some people do not receive the correct health care they should get. There is a lack and limited services for people with these disabilities. The people with disabilities are more likely to report health care provider skills limited for their needs but more likely to be reported for being treated badly or denied. If there's one thing the government can do is improve the health outcomes for people with the disability which may give them better resources.

  1. Michael, thank you for your post on disability and health. I agree with you when you said that people who focus on prevention and promotion of health mainly target people with disabilities, but I think they should make sure that they are targeting people without disabilities as well. I also think that there should be more services offered for people with disabilities because there is definitely a lack of those. I do think that the government should step in to make sure that there are more resources for people with disabilities. I also think the government should offer better health care options for people with disabilities as well. Overall, I think that people with disabilities should be offered better care because a lot of them have needs that are unmet, like you said. Thank you for your post on this information regarding disabilities and health.

  2. Great post! I too also know a lot of people that are disabled and I found this post to be very informative. I think that the organizations responsible for taking care of people with disabilities should maybe help them to find a outlet either it being a job or health educator. I think a lot of people judge the book by the cover but not the content of the book. We need to empower those individuals to make them feel like they matter! Great post!

  3. Me likey!!! I found what you were talking about to be very important. The discussion of disabilities in today's society can be so taboo. It is important for people to know and understand that individuals with disabilities should still be treated with respect and given the proper care they need.

  4. I completely agree people with disabilities are not as good of health care as they should be given. People with disabilities seemed to be judged so much for something they can not even control. This is so wrong of society, and to not offer them the best health care is crazy. They have many different needs that a person without disabilities does not have. I hope to see you go more in depth about some of the bigger disabilities and/or some that many do not know about! Good job.

  5. This post was very informative. I was very surprised how you talked about individuals with disabilities receiving the most care but having the most unmet needs. That is a very disturbing statistic that everyone should really think about. Great job.
